Window measuring guide

A beautiful fit
starts here.

Measure your windows for curtains, pelmets and blinds with our illustrated guide. Share your measurements and fabric choice with us, and we can calculate the fabric required and discuss your quotation.

Before you begin

Always use a rigid rule for greater accuracy. Keep your measurements in one consistent unit and tell us which unit you have used.

01Curtains: measuring the width
  • Measure the width of the track or pole, rather than the window itself (diagram 1, A to B).
  • If the track overlaps in the centre, measure the full width of the track plus the overlap (diagram 2, A to B plus C to D).
  • If no hardware is in place, measure the window width and add 15% to each side for curtain stack back — 30% in total (diagram 3).

02Curtains: measuring the length
  • For a track, measure from the eye of the curtain glider to where you want the curtain to finish (diagram 4, A to B). Add the depth of the track (A to C).
  • For a pole with rings, measure from the eye of the small ring underneath the pole ring to your chosen finishing point (diagram 5, A to B).
  • Decide whether your curtains will finish at the sill, below the sill or at the floor (diagram 6). For floor-length curtains, allow them to clear the floor by approximately 1cm.
  • If no hardware is in place, decide where the pole or track will sit — usually 10–15cm above the window frame — and measure from that point to the desired curtain finish.
  • For eyelet-headed curtains, measure from the top edge of the pole to where you want the curtains to finish (diagram 7). We will add an upstand to this measurement.

03Pelmets: width and depth

You will need a wooden board in place above the window, usually 15cm × 2.5cm.

Measure the front and sides to give us the width (diagram 8, A plus B). Then decide the depth you would like the pelmet to be — usually one fifth or one sixth of the curtain length.

Measure from the top of the board to where you would like the pelmet to finish. We are happy to advise on this.

04Blinds: fitting inside a recess
  • Check for anything that could obstruct the blind’s drop, such as tiles or plugs.
  • Measure the recess from side to side (diagram 9, A to B) and from top to bottom (C to D).
  • Measure in several places to account for uneven surfaces.
  • Do not make any deductions. Give us the measurements as taken and clearly state that they are recess measurements. We will make the necessary deductions.

05Blinds: fitting outside the window

Measure as for curtains, allowing 5cm to 8cm either side of the window. The same applies above the window.

Diagram 10 shows the finished width from A to B and the drop from C to D.

06Curtain poles: choosing the length
  1. Measure the inside recess width of the window.
  2. Add at least 15cm each side — 30cm in total.
  3. If you are unsure which length pole to choose, choose the longer size, as poles can be cut down.

Pole measurements refer to the pole itself, where the rings can travel. Finials extend beyond the quoted pole length.
